Fil-Am Community Terminology
Pinoy: Coined by the 1st Generation Filipino Americans living in Stockton California right outside of the Bay Area. It was to describe the Filipino American Experience and they used it with pride.
Flip: Slur for Filipino. its abbreviation is Fucking Little Island People.. but in the 70's it was ok to use amongst Filipinos.
Fob: abbreviation of "Free On Board" (1950's) it was immigrants who didn't have papers. morphed in the mid 80's in Hawaii to "Fresh Off the Boat." meaning was a person who hasn't assimilated to the current country they have immigrated to and they stand out like a sore thumb.
Colonial Mentality: Sadly this is another Mentality Filipinos have. they believe anything forign (like from the USA) is better! and they tend to look down on local produced stuff. and this has also gone far to as thinking a white person is great to have a relationship preference cuz they feel they are successful.
Crab Mentality: Sadly Filipinos are known to have this mentality. instead of helping other Filipinos succeed they tend to pull them down. That's where the term comes from a "crab in a bucket" metaphor. instead of organizing and helping other crabs get out they are all grabbing at each other and pulling each other down.
White Wash: a Filipino person who has assimilated too much into the white culture. that they lost touch with theirs. and has even gone far in not claiming that they are Filipino.
